What's Habitat for Humanity?
Habitat International

Southern Thiland was one of the recovery areas that Habitat focused on after the 2004 Asia/Pacific tsunami disaster.
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry whose goal it is to eliminate poverty housing from the world and to ensure that adequate shelter is a matter of public conscience and action.
The organization is founded on the principle of being a people-to-people partnership designed to link families and communities in need with volunteers and resources in order to build decent, affordable housing. We build, renovate and repair simple, decent and affordable housing with people who live in inadequate housing and are unable to secure adequate housing by usual means. The organization selects homeowner families without discriminating on the basis of race, creed or ethnic background, and all selected homeowners dedicate "sweat-equity" hours, working as partners with the affiliate and other volunteers to carry out Habitat's mission on both a local and worldwide basis. The homes are sold to families for no profit and with no interest added, and all house payments are used for the construction or renovation of additional Habitat homes.
Habitat is not only dedicated to the construction of homes; we are also committed to developing and uplifting families and communitieswith our work. We are a global partnership, working with families in need of decent housing around the world in our attempt to be borderless in our vision and impact.
Although Habitat for Humanity is an ecumenical Christian organization, it invites and welcomes the participation of chapter members, volunteers and donors of other faiths and spiritual beliefs who are actively committed to the primary missions and principles of Habitat for Humanity.

IC Habitat builds houses at the Corning affiliate of Habitat for Humanity!
The campus chapter of Habitat for Humanity aims to capture the imagination, energy and hope of Ithaca College students in order to productively and responsibly involve them in the work of Habitat for Humanity International. We are responsible for educating our members, the campus and the local Ithaca community about Habitat's mission; advocating on behalf of those in need of decent shelter; working toward an end to poverty housing and homelessness; building and rehabilitating houses in partnership with Habitat for Humanity affiliates and homeowners; and raising funds for our efforts.
IC Habitat for Humanity is one of the largest student organizations at Ithaca College, and it is one of the most developed, influential student chapters of HFH in New York state. Our active membership numbers in the hundreds, and each semester we manage to host a great number of events and building activities.
In addition to our Saturday program builds, the staple of IC Habitat that keeps members coming back for more, our Winter and Spring Break Trips are incredibly popular. Every January, the last week before the spring semester begins, we send more than 50 students out to three different locations down South and out West to build for the week and see how the Habitat for Humanity mission can influence lives in all parts of the country. In the Spring, we coordinate two trips - one is a typical break trip that consists of a week of building at a local affiliate, and the other is Advocacy in Albany, a lobbying initiative that IC Habitat newly joined in order to work toward addressing long-term, broader issues related to affordable housing.
IC Habitat also undertakes tons of fundraisers each year in order to widen the scope of our organization, raise money to put toward Winter and Spring Break Trips, and ensure that our organization can be as successful as possible. Included in these fundraisers are our Flocking falls, Row for Humanity in February, and October's Habidash.
We also work to help broaden students' horizons by fighting against homelessness and learning all that we can about affordable housing in the United States and globally. Our annual Sleep-Out helps students put themselves into the shoes of homeless people while listening to speakers who actually led that life for some time. And April's Act! Speak! Build! Month is always a way for us to expose the Ithaca community to the realities of why we work so hard throughout the year.
Habitat for Humanity at Ithaca College is a fun, inclusive, feel-good way to make a difference in your local, national and global community. Come join us.
