As a foundation of our goal to directly increase the amount of affordable, decent housing available in the world, Ithaca College Habitat members travel most Saturday mornings and afternoons to contribute to a local affiliate's build site.
WHAT: IC Habitat volunteers contribute to every phase of the construction process. That includes framing walls, spackling and painting surfaces, nailing siding, shingling and building roofs, and refining cosmetic exteriors. We volunteer alongside other local volunteers, affiliate partners and future Habitat for Humanity homeowners.
WHERE: Our primary affiliate is the Steuben County chapter of Habitat for Humanity, located in Corning, New York, about 45 minutes from Ithaca. IC Habitat has been working in Corning for several years. We sometimes work alongside Tompkins County Habitat as well.
WHEN: Most Saturdays during the semester, a group of 10-15 Ithaca College students make the drive to Corning, leaving at 9:00am and returning at 4:00pm.
WHY: Weekend builds are a great way to learn new, valuable construction skills with each build, contribute to the process of a house for a deserving family and build new friendships while bolstering old friendships. As always, during weekend builds Habitat commits itself as a team to provide opportunities for personal growth and leadership development in order to better serve and shape our community.
